Events that impacted my life before I was born

Invention of Computers

The first ever computer, a calculating machine, was invented by Charles Babbage. The invention of computers completely changed the world in many ways. Computers are used to store data, communicate, and do tasks quickly. Manual jobs can now be done in a computer and it’s very evident these days, with the implementation of online classes, that computers are very important.

The Philippines’ First Win in Miss Universe Pageant

In the year 1969, Gloria Diaz, bagged the title as the Philippine’s first Miss Universe winner. Starting then, the beauty pageant industry in the Philippines rose and the Philippines gained a spot as strong contenders in international beauty pageants.

Events that impacted my life when I was born

Launch of Facebook

In 2004, one of the top social media platforms, Facebook, was launched. I believe that it completely changed the way we communicate. We used to communicate through sending letters or Yahoo! mails. I remember having a specific time per day to log in to may Yahoo! account to send an e-mail to my dad abroad. But now, we can now communicate through posting stories, updating our status, and sending chats to people from different parts of the world through Facebook.

Me Too Movement

Me Too founder Tarana Burke started the movement to raise awareness about women who have been abused. We live in a society where men see women as inferior and that they would take it as a sign that they can just do anything to women. Sexual violence is present whether we like it or not. Women experience catcalling everyday and I think the movement has changed how women think, that they shouldn’t be afraid to stand up and that there are people supporting them, which I think is wonderful.

Events that will impact my future

Covid-19 Pandemic

I remember sitting with my friend in a milk tea shop in Taft back in March, getting excited with the announcement that classes were being suspended for a week. Little did we know, it would turn into months. The pandemic has turned the world upside down. Many people struggled mentally and financially, and the competence of the government was tested. There are countries who have returned to their normal lives but there are a lot of countries that are still struggling putting an end to the spreading of the virus. It’s hard to accept the fact that our lives will never be the same again, and things will be done online for the next couple of years.

ABS-CBN Shutdown

The shutting down of the ABS-CBN created a stir around a world as it was talked to be a repetition of what happened in the martial law era. The closing of the network started as a personal issue of the President. Almost 7,000 jobs are lost, adding to the hardships of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a Communication Arts student, it will impact my life because the line of work I’m about to go into is in line with media and journalism. As I see it now, the government and high officials has constraint the freedom of press.
